Sure, everybody hates you these days, but face it, there seem to be a lot of cops out there trying to make it worse, not better. Take this, for example: guy is typing (quite possibly texting, according to phone records) into his car laptop when he runs over and kills a cyclist. No charges to be filed against him, he was behaving in a lawful manner. Sigh.

It's business as usual at the sheriff's department.

Or a super rich 16 year old. You'd still have 3 more lives to take and be fine

As it says in the article, I'd be suing the shit out of the LA Sheriff's Department for wrongful death/negligence. In a civil case, you don't have to prove "beyond a reasonable doubt", just a preponderance of the evidence to support your case.
Although that bike outfit that guy has on, I don't know. It may have been a mercy killing.

A few years ago here in Austin, a cop who was typing on his laptop ran a stop sign and hit a motorcyclist. The city ended up settling for $250,000, the officer got a three-day suspension. ( link ). At the time of the accident, the city had only recently instituted a ban on texting while driving. However, public safety officials are exempt from that ban.

but he's not exactly a lithe little waif that you just can't see if they turn sideways. Not easy to not see.

Cops have not been doing themselves any favors in the PR department as of late.

That's awful. I gotta say, I have a lot of respect for cops and what they do but on the other hand it does seem like they are always getting away with things that they shouldn't.

Well, that kind of proves the point of negligence, IMHO. When I ride my bike, I wear a bright yellow helmet and shirt, so I'm visible. I've had people pull in front of my bike, and then claim they didn't see me. Really? Six foot four inches in a bright canary yellow shirt & helmet, and you didn't see me? That's negligence, right there. If you were paying attention to driving, you'd have spotted me a 1/4 mile away. But, nope, too busy talking on the phone or some such. Just like Mr. Police Officer here.

I always put reflective tape on helmets when I was riding motorcycles and I remember one time, I was riding through Texas, I think (loooong straight road), and there had been a car a ways back behind me. I pulled up to a light, and the car pulled up beside me a minute or so later, and the guy was asking about my helmet, and what I did to it because it looked like my head was on fire going down the road. Pretty cool, though I am still convinced that lifestyle chemicals might have had some influence.

It's actually the DA though that's choosing not to file charges. But the DA and SO are cahoots so...
